TOSHIBA MATERIALS FOR ART

The new LED technology TRI-R, developed by Toshiba Materials, is a special lighting partner for the exhibition “Symbolism. Art in Europe from the Belle Époque to the Great War” held at Palazzo Reale in Milan.

The new generation LED TRI-R, developed by Toshiba Materials, has been chosen to illuminate several key masterpieces of the exhibition “Symbolism. Art in Europe from the Belle Époque to the Great War”. This exhibition, to be held at Palazzo Reale, Milan from 3rd February to 5th June 2016, is curated by Fernando Mazzocca and Claudia Zevi, in partnership with Michel Draguet, sponsored by the Municipality of Milan-Culture, and produced by 24 ORE Cultura – 24 ORE Group and Arthemisia Group.
Five of the most representative and significant works were selected to be illuminated by TRI-R from among over 100 exhibits of paintings, sculptures and graphics. These include: L’Elu (The Chosen One) by Ferdinand Hodler, Il Peccato (The Sin) by Franz Von Stuck, Le vergini savie e le vergini stolte (The Wise Virgins and the Foolish Virgins) by Giulio Aristide Sartorio, La Giovinezza (Youth) by Giorgio Kienerk e La primavera classica (Classical Spring) by Galileo Chini.

TRI-R light
TRI-R is made using technology patented by Toshiba Materials to recreate the solar spectrum and has been released to market in collaboration with TOL Studio.
By lowering the blue component of the light source to the level of the solar spectrum, the LED developed by Toshiba Materials bathes the works in natural light without glare, similar to the light in which they were conceived by the artists. This aspect makes TRI-R particularly suitable for lighting museum spaces, where true colour rendition, contrast and the protection of works from light-source heat is fundamental.
The aim of the experiments undertaken by Toshiba Materials in developing TRI-R was to recreate the most suitable light for human wellbeing— sunlight. This was achieved by removing the harmful ultraviolet rays and high heat-radiating infrared, and combining purple LEDs with Toshiba Materials' patented technology for phosphorus. By generating white light, TRI-R is able to render colours naturally.

Recent and upcoming encounters with TRI-R
Bearing witness to Toshiba Materials' interest in the art world, its president Kumpei Kobayashi, an art lover and advocate for the TRI-R project, will attend the opening of the exhibition. The illumination of the Milanese exhibition is the first stage of a journey through the art world, which will also lead TRI-R to light up other important European museums. In the past, TRI-R has already been selected for the prestigious Ambrosiana Art Gallery in Milan, and for the Japanese pavilion restaurant at EXPO 2015 in Milan. It has been used in operating theatres in the medical field, due to its outstanding visibility and colour rendition, and in the industrial design world by companies and designers such as Ingo Maurer, who opted for TRI-R for the new LED version of his famous Lucellino lamp, which premiered at the Euroluce exhibition during the 2015 Furniture Fair.

TRI-R will feature at the next edition of Light & Building in Frankfurt, which will take place from 13th to 18th March 2016, and can be seen in stand D46 / Hall 4.1.
