The new LED TRI-R technology developed by Toshiba Materials has make its debut at Light & Building in Frankfurt, the largest lighting technology fair in Europe

The new generation LED TRI-R, developed by Toshiba Materials in collaboration with TOL Studio, is scheduled to has make its debut on the scene of Light & Building, the most prestigious lighting technology fair in Europe, after scoring successful international partnerships in the museum, food service and industrial design fields. Its most recent has been the exhibition on Symbolism currently being held at Palazzo Reale in Milan.

TRI-R Lighting
TRI-R is made using technology patented by Toshiba Materials and creates similar light to that of the solar spectrum, specifically by reducing the blue component of the light source. It produces natural, glare-free light that does not alter colours and gives sharpness to details and textures. That makes TRI_R ideal for settings in which quality lighting is crucial.
With the development of TRI-R, Toshiba Materials has managed to recreate sunlight, which is the most suitable light for human wellbeing, aware of its influence on the metabolism and on physical and psychological wellbeing. The outcome was achieved by removing the harmful ultraviolet rays and high heat-radiating infrared and combining purple LEDs with Toshiba Materials' patented technology for phosphorus. By generating white light, TRI-R is able to make colours appear natural.

Moreover, research being conducted with several international universities on the relationship between light and the body's biological reactions is confirming the influence of sunlight on the circadian rhythm, that is, man's biological rhythm. In the future, this will broaden TRI-R's application — in medicine and, in general, for uses tied to a person's wellbeing.

Recent applications of TRI-R
The Light & Building booth has featured several recent applications carried out in various fields: museums, food service and industrial product design.
In the museum and art field, TRI-R helps to enhance colour fidelity and the sharpness of the details and textures and allows the "three-dimensional nature" of the strokes present in some painted artworks to be seen. This can be appreciated in the lighting operations carried out for the exhibition Simbolismo (Symbolism), currently being held at Palazzo Reale (Milan, Italy (3rd February-5th June) and in the 2015 exhibition held in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan (Italy), in which several masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and Brueghel were illuminated.
In food service, TRI-R was used in the restaurants of the Japanese Pavilion at EXPO Milan 2015 (Italy). There, the properties of TRI-R enabled attention to be drawn to the colours of the food and wellbeing of the environment.
In industrial product design already available on the market, TRI-R features in the iconic Lucellino lamp designed by Ingo Maurer, recreating similar lighting to that of the incandescent bulb presented at the 2015 Euroluce trade show in Milan.

TRI-R lighting partner at Milan Palazzo Reale “Simbolismo” exhibition in Italy
Thanks to its performance, TRI-R has been chosen to illuminate several key masterpieces of the exhibition “Symbolism. Art in Europe from the Belle Époque to the Great War” - Milan Palazzo Reale, Italy, 3rd February - 5th June 2016. It’s curated by Fernando Mazzocca and Claudia Zevi, in partnership with Michel Draguet, sponsored by the Municipality of Milan-Culture, and produced by 24 ORE Cultura – 24 ORE Group and Arthemisia Group.
Five of the most representative and significant works have been selected to be illuminated by TRI-R from among over 100 exhibits of paintings, sculptures and graphics. These include: L’Elu (The Chosen One) by Ferdinand Hodler, Il Peccato (The Sin) by Franz Von Stuck, Le vergini savie e le vergini stolte (The Wise Virgins and the Foolish Virgins) by Giulio Aristide Sartorio, La Giovinezza (Youth) by Giorgio Kienerk e La primavera classica (Classical Spring) by Galileo Chini. The exhibition lighting design is by architect Francesco Murano e the lighting appliances are by Rimani Italian company.

The role of TRI-R in illuminating these significant works has been crucial in allowing their intensity and bright colours to be appreciated, as well as, in some cases, the richness of their frames, as Kumpei Kobayashi, president of Toshiba Materials and advocate of the TRI-R project, points out. “The colour brightness has been substantially increased in all five canvases illuminated with TRI-R, without unpleasant changes in any of the dominant colour hues. This is the result of TRI-R's continuous spectrum, without spikes or absence of specific colours, as seen in the pale blue hue of the angels' garments in Ferdinand Hodler's "L'eletto" (The Chosen One), and the beautiful golden altarpiece in Giulio Aristide Sartorio's “Le vergini savie e le vergini stolte” (The Wise Virgins and the Foolish Virgins). The multicolour vibrancy, particularly of the purple in Galileo Chini's “La Primavera classica” (Classical Spring), is also notable.

TRI-R's contribution to the lighting project was thus fundamental, as lighting designer Francesco Murano points out. “The technique of mixing colour temperatures enhances the apparent luminance of the works and, in simple terms, the paintings appear to be much more illuminated than they really are because the colours are brighter. The mixture of colour temperatures, however, must also take into account the colour rendering index, that is, the colours must not be misrepresented by the mixture itself. This isn't always possible with “normal” LEDs but, instead, with TRI-R, a very high colour rendering index of 97 was maintained.”
