TRI-R, the new LED created by Toshiba Materials, is one of the protagonists of the exhibition“New Materials for a Smart City”

Materials Village 2017 - Superstudio - Via Tortona 27, Milan

4th-9th April 2017
Monday 3rd April - opening and press preview 5 pm - 7 pm

TRI-R, the new LED developed by Toshiba Materials in collaboration with TOL Studio, is among the protagonists of the exhibition “New Materials for a Smart City”, curated by Material ConneXion Italia and presented within the Materials Village platform in the Superstudio spaces during the Fuorisalone.

TRI-R produces light similar to that of the solar spectrum, is very close to natural light, does not affect colours, gives sharpness to details and textures without glare, and highlights the micro-textures that characterize the materials. These unique qualities led Material ConneXion towards this revolutionary lighting technology and to apply it in the exhibition on Smart Cities, which focuses on materials and new technologies.

In the exhibition, TRI-R will illuminate a collection of material panels, highlighting the grain of the wood, the depth and variety of fabric and leather textures, and the vividness of the colours. To discover the quality of the light produced by TRI-R compared to that of a conventional LED, visitors to the exhibition will be able to interact with a special light box featuring holes in which to insert and illuminate their hands, feet or various objects. At the opening (Monday 3rd April, 5 pm) the famous architect Italo Rota will present the TRI-R LED, as it will be applied in one of his major projects underway: the restoration of the Civic Museums in Reggio Emilia.

Moreover, TRI-R has already been used in important applications in the museum and artistic fields, in which it brought out the natural colour hues chosen by the artists: in the lighting projects of the Symbolism and Rubens exhibitions, both held at Palazzo Reale (Milan, 2016 and 2017). The quality of lighting is also fundamentally important in interior design and architecture, particularly in the perception of surfaces and materials. In this area, the application of TRI-R during the Marco Piva exhibition at the Scuola della Misericordia in Venice (May 2016) for the Biennale of Architecture, made a great contribution. Other significant applications have been in the fashion sector, in the “CRAFTING THE FUTURE” exhibition held in Milan and organized by the National Chamber for Italian Fashion (MUDEC Milan, September 2016) and in February 2017, with the illumination of the new ready-to-wear collection of the historic Capucci Fashion House. In this field, TRI-R highlights the three-dimensional effects in the fabrics, emphasizing their detail, colour contrast, and the combinations of various materials. Finally, in industrial design, the famous “poet of light” Ingo Maurer has used TRI-R in his iconic lamp Lucellino.

Because of its reduced blue component and the uniformity of its continuous spectrum, TRI-R can produce a white light similar to sunlight, in which humanity has lived since its origins. Sunlight respects man's natural psychophysical and biological balance, thus safeguarding the circadian rhythm. For this reason, various comparative studies are currently being conducted in several international universities on the influence that TRI-R and conventional LED lighting have on humans.
